ECTS

ECTS is a learner-centred system for credit accumulation and transfer based on the transparency of learning outcomes and learning processes. It aims to facilitate planning, delivery, evaluation, recognition and validation of qualifications and units of learning as well as student mobility. ECTS is widely used in formal higher education and can be applied to other lifelong learning activities.

ECTS credits

ECTS credits are based on the workload students need in order to achieve expected learning outcomes. Learning outcomes describe what a learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do after successful completion of a process of learning. They relate to level descriptors in national and European qualifications frameworks.

Workload indicates the time students typically need to complete all learning activities (such as lectures, seminars, projects, practical work, self-study and examinations) required to achieve the expected learning outcomes.

60 ECTS credits are attached to the workload of a fulltime year of formal learning (academic year) and the associated learning outcomes. In most cases, student workload ranges from 1,500 to 1,800 hours for an academic year, whereby one credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of work.

One credits stands for 28 hours of study.

Grading systems 

Each country has its own approach to grading. It is therefore recommended to familiarise yourself with the Dutch grading system before coming to the Netherlands to study.

As an Erasmus student you are welcome to study at our university, and the following issues apply:

• For participation in part of a study programme at our university, no tuition fees will be charged;
• The exchange is inclusive of the use of facilities such as computers and library; this does not apply to accommodation, photocopying and meals;
• Where possible, we provide travel arrangements from and to the airport for arrival and departure;
• We provide you with a buddy throughout your period at Driestar Christian University for Teacher Education;
• We allocate a tutor to you, who will be your contact during your study programme;
• We provide language courses (free of charge) to incoming students/staff to improve language skills (if needed);
• As a student you have the same rights and responsibilities as our regular students;
• You draw up your own programme with your tutor (course catalogue) and formalize this in a Learning Agreement (> 15 ECTS);
• The Transcript of Records indicates the number of ECTS achieved and the grades awarded;
• The credits achieved and the period of mobility as part of the Erasmus Programme are recorded on the Diploma Supplement;
• We provide you with a learning agreement (> 15 ECTS) prior to your departure to Gouda. At successful completion of your programme you will receive a transcript of records;
